The Purpose of Composing the Treatise
The perfect buddhas, source of benefit and happiness,
Are born from having accomplished the sacred Dharma.
And that accomplishment depends on knowing the practices;
So I will explain the bodhisattvas’ practices.

Verse 1: Listening, Contemplating and Meditating
Having gained this supreme vessel of leisure and endowments, so difficult to find,
To liberate oneself and others from the ocean of birth and death,
Without wasting day or night,
To listen, contemplate and meditate is the practice of a Bodhisattva.
Verse 2: Leaving One’s Homeland
Attachment to loved ones surges like water;
Hatred towards enemies blazes like fire;
Through ignorance, what to adopt and abandon is obscured by darkness;
To leave one’s homeland is the practice of a Bodhisattva.
Verse 3: Relying on Solitude

Without distraction, virtuous practice naturally increases;
With clarity of mind, certainty in the Dharma is born;
To rely on solitude is the practice of a Bodhisattva.

Wealth and possessions, amassed through effort, are finally left behind;
The guest, consciousness, must abandon the inn of the body;
To renounce the concerns of this life is the practice of a Bodhisattva.
Verse 5: Abandoning Harmful Friends
When keeping company with someone causes the three poisons to increase;
Destroys the activities of listening, reflection, and meditation;
And causes loving-kindness and compassion to be lost;
To abandon such harmful friend is the practice of a Bodhisattva.

And good qualities increase like the waxing moon;
To cherish such a spiritual friend even more than one’s own body;
Is the practice of a Bodhisattva.

Verse 9: Generate Yearning for Liberation

They are phenomena that perish in but a moment.
Therefore, to generate yearning for the never-changing state of liberation
Is the practice of a Bodhisattva.

Verse 11: Practice Exchanging Self and Others

Final Dedication
Relying on the sutras, tantras, and the treatises,
And the teachings of all the noble and excellent ones,
For those who wish to train in the path of the Buddha,
I have composed these Thirty-Seven Practices of a Bodhisattva.
Since my learning is poor and my scholarship meager,
This composition is not elegant and will hardly please the learned.
However, as it is based on the scriptures and the words of the noble ones,
The practices of a Bodhisattva should be free from error.
Yet the great waves of the Bodhisattvas’ deeds
Are difficult for a dull-minded person like me to fathom.
Therefore, I beseech the wise to forgive with compassion
Any faults, contradictions, or irrelevant passages.
Through this merit, may all sentient beings
Generate both conventional and ultimate bodhicitta.
Without abiding in either samsara or the peace of nirvana, may they be free,
And become like the protector Avalokiteśvara.
