ཕྱག་རྒྱ
Seal, Mudra; 印, 手印 (洽加); Tibetan: ཕྱག་རྒྱ (chakgya); Wylie: phyag rgya; Sanskrit: Mudrā;
Mudra means seal. It is a symbolic hand and finger spiritual gesture or pose used in Buddhist ritual or dance. Buddhas and deities are often depicted with his hands in the meditation, teaching or other mudras. In Vajrayana, mudras extend to the various parts of the entire body to interact with Tantric deities. In etymological terms, “mu” means wisdom of emptiness and “dra” means freedom from samsara.
This is an beta (testing) version of our Chinese / English / Sanskrit / Tibetan Buddhism popup dictionary system. We are still in the process of fine tuning the structure and layout of the system and resolving some minor issues. As of spring of 2024, there are over 3,100 Tibetan terms and over 6,800 entries in all languages. We plan to add a lot more terms throughout 2024 and beyond.
