Four Means of Gathering; 四攝;
Four Means of Gathering are four methods used by bodhisattvas to attract, guide, and train sentient beings on the path to liberation. By skillfully employing these approaches, bodhisattvas establish close relationships with others, earn their trust, and gradually lead them toward the Dharma. The four means are:
- Giving: Providing material goods, protection, or emotional support to others. This act of generosity opens the hearts of beings and reduces their attachment to possessions.
- Kind Speech: Speaking in a gentle, truthful, and affectionate manner. This includes teaching the Dharma in ways that suit the listener’s capacity and offering words of comfort and encouragement.
- Beneficial Conduct: Engaging in actions that directly benefit others, such as helping with daily tasks, offering practical assistance, or working to alleviate their suffering.
- Cooperation: Practicing together with others, sharing their joys and sorrows, and participating in their activities. By being a companion in both ordinary and spiritual pursuits, the bodhisattva gradually guides them toward virtuous actions.
