Six Supernatural Powers; 神通, 六通; Tibetan: མངོན་ཤེས (ngön-shay); Wylie: mngon shes ;
Six Supernatural Powers refer to extraordinary cognitive abilities that arise as a byproduct of deep meditative concentration. These powers are not the goal of Buddhist practice but can naturally emerge as the mind becomes purified and more subtle. The standard list includes six types, with the first five being worldly and the sixth being supramundane:
- Psychic Power: The ability to manifest various transformations, such as multiplying one’s body, passing through solid objects, or flying through the air.
- Divine Ear: The ability to hear sounds, both human and celestial, from far away or in other realms.
- Mind Reading: The ability to perceive the mental states and thoughts of other beings.
- Recollection of Past Lives: The ability to remember one’s own previous existences.
- Divine Eye: The ability to see beings and their rebirths according to their karma, as well as distant or subtle objects.
- Extinction of Outflows: The complete eradication of all mental defilements, which leads to liberation and is the only superknowledge unique to enlightened beings.
